‘…the book of a self-taught working man, & we all know how distressing they are, how egotistic, insistent, raw, striking, and ultimately nauseating.

– Virginia Woolf on Ulysses, Diaries

(There has always been something dodgy about who exactly “one” is when Virginia Woolf says “one does” this and “one says” that. Not to mention that she’s impressively wrong with her facts in the first place.)

  1. I like Kerouac where he calls Joyce “psychotically sloppy”.

The Kiberd book has made Ulysses seem very readable to me, but I’ve moved on (or attempted to) to Finnegans Wake, and that makes everything that people complain about Ulysses seem true.

also, lulz at Joyce a “working man”.

  2. “We all know” – Virginia Woolf writing to her diary maybe, but there’s nothing more annoying than when she does the whole Victorian ethno/social group = trait thing. Having qualms about Ulysses is fine, but being snooty about it, or about anything literary when you’re seeing yourself as “enlightened”, is pretty unforgivable.
